The word “Seon” derives from Korean Zen Buddhism (Seonbulgyo) rooted in the belief that true freedom lies within one’s own mind. “The horizon in the series offers the space of quietude where one can observe and let go of the ever-shifting moments within. And that peace and strength can arise through connecting with the soft and vulnerable parts of us.” says Hur. The softness is conveyed through the delicate tactility of Hanji (Korean mulberry paper) — it will be perceived differently depending on the environment and light where the work dwells and one’s ever evolving self. Hur’s work is a place of rest and awakening of both the familiar and unfamiliar parts of ourselves — leading us to seek the values and truths that matter to each of us.

Passage series explores the point of inflection-reflection both metaphorically and physically. The paper is in tension by a wooden support to create a crevice suggesting the yet to be discovered and imagined surface. Like a sun dial, the shadow casted on the paper changes throughout the day marking time and space — shifting moment to moment. It represents the invisible passage that can be written and re-written infinitely.

The mulberry paper tree where Hanji , known for their resilience and versatility, is derived from grows on metamorphic bedrocks. Water moves through the multi-directional cracks alternating the forms of the solidified time and getting into the roots of the trees. Such process represents the slow and subtle evolutions in ourselves formed both by receiving and altering. And that life can thrive on these non-horizontal and multi-directional grounds. The subtle layers and apertures draw out the endless forest and spiral within.
